Our understanding of interactions between microbes and Earth have been transformed within the last decade by innovative technologies and conceptual advances, not least the recognition that environments considered too hostile to life play critical roles in global biogeochemistry.

Coupled, these advances will deliver transformative advances in microbial science in the next decade which will prove essential in addressing existential challenges such as climate change and antimicrobial resistance.
