Using AI for good!

Ever since ChatGPT exploded onto the scene in November 2022, the landscape of higher education and the workplace in general has been in a state of rapid change. As we move through 2023, new tools and new ways of working using Generative AI are continually being developed and launched. The workplace is already being transformed by AI.

Some serious risks come along with Generative AI, however. The output from AI tools is often factually incorrect, incomplete, or biased. If a student relies on AI uncritically to generate assignments, they risk submitting poor quality coursework and getting low marks, not to mention bypassing the learning process entirely. If students are not transparent about how and where they used AI, they run afoul of unacceptable academic practice.

There are, however, some positive opportunities for students and educators to engage with these tools. AI can be used to help students learn in ways that are effective, ethical, and promote critical thinking.

Students need AI literacy not only in their coursework but also in their future careers. Teaching staff need to become AI literate themselves so that they can provide the right training and support for their students.

We will look at what is happening across the higher education sector in connection with AI literacy and explore ways to use these tools in positive ways, to support critical thinking and ethical practice.
